GOVERNORS’ FOUNDATION COURSE
The course starts at 6.30pm and finishes at 8.30pm in Bryngarw House.

The foundation course is suitable for new governors, less experienced governors and governors who want to update their experience with reference to current changes. Following completion of the six modules, governors will be sent a certificate for attending.
TOPICAL TRAINING COURSES
COMPLAINTS PROCEDURES
18 February 2008 from 6:30pm till 8:30pm
This module will provide governors with a general understanding and awareness of their role in dealing with general complaints about the school and any community facilities or services the school provides. The objectives are for governors to understand:
- The legal framework and the role of a school complaints policy;
- the process of developing/amending the school complaints policy;
the content of a school complaints policy and the requirement to publish the policy;
- the relationship between the school complaints policy and other statutory processes for complaints and appeals;
- the procedure for dealing with complaints.
CHILD PROTECTION
28 February 2008 from 6:30pm till 8:30pm
All school have a statutory duty to exercise their functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and it is recommended that all governors attend child protection awareness training. This awareness training will include:
- Legal context:
- schools’ responsibilities;
- categories of abuse and signs and symptoms;
- and the child protection process including referral.
RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION
10 March 2008 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm
The benefits of attending this session will be:
- Familiar with the recruitment and selection policy and the guidance notes;
- aware of the support available;
- able to conduct recruitment and selection in a consistent manner;
- aware of the legislative framework surrounding recruitment and selection and in particular discrimination and its consequences;
- have sufficient knowledge and confidence to enable you to recruit and select successfully.
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
12 March 2008 from 6:30pm till 8:30pm
The nominated governors have already had detailed training in this subject area. This module is an overview of how the performance management arrangements should be managed within the school environment;
- How the performance management arrangements should be managed within the school environment;
- Understanding the framework of performance management, which exists within the school and is now central to the school’s pay policy structure.
FOUNDATION PHASE
13 March 2008 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm
This module will enable Governors to have an understanding of:
- The Foundation Phase curriculum, which the Welsh Assembly
Government plan to introduce in all schools in September 2008;
- the requirements of the Foundation Phase curriculum:
- the main principles and approaches;
- the timetable for the implementation of this curriculum.
INCLUSION STRATEGY
6 May 2008 from 6:30 until 8:30pm
In September 2007 a draft inclusion policy was drawn up by the Executive Director – Learning, Hilary Anthony outlining the aims of Bridgend County Borough Council for providing for the needs of all children. This session will provide:
- An overview of the inclusion strategy
Governors with the opportunity to ask questions and express views in relation to the key areas of development for children with additional learning needs that are currently being considered.
COMMUNITY FOCUS SCHOOLS
20 May 2008 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm
The aim of this session is:
- To raise awareness about community focused schools;
- To consider and discuss the role of governors in developing community focused schools;
- To consider and discuss the benefits and implications of developing a community focused schools approach for
your schools (for you s governors, for the pupils, their families and wider communities).
- The session will be facilitated by Emma Davies (Learning Communities Co-Coordinator) and Contin You Cymru, a charity that provides a support service to all 22 LEAs in Wales to develop their community focused schools’ provision.
SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION: ISSUES FOR SCHOOL GOVERNORS
22 May 2008 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm
The aim of the session is to review/update the legal framework and the responsibilities of governing bodies on:
- The current legal framework including the roles and responsibilities of governors;
- Curriculum links;
- Sex and relationships education – What? Why? How?
- Planning an age-appropriate SRE programme;
- Monitoring and evaluation.
PUPIL EXCLUSIONS
10 June 2008 from 6:30pm till 8:30pm
The aim of session is to cover:
- Statutory framework;
- Welsh Assembly Government Guidance – Circular 1/2004;
- Types of exclusion – Fixed Term
- Permanent
Alternatives to exclusion;
- Roles and responsibilities – Head teacher
- Pupil Disciplinary Committee
- Independent Appeals Panel

THE EFFECTIVE GOVERNING BODY
17 June 2008 from 6:30pm till 8:30pm
The session concentrates on the following areas and, in particular, how they relate to the 7 key questions upon which inspections are based on:
- Meaningful, formal links between individual and departments (for secondary schools);
- Individual governors and subject co-ordinators and class teachers (for primary schools);
- Guidelines and protocol for governor visits to classes;
Strategic planning;
- Monitoring and evaluation.
