Sport

Sport is an important aspect of school life because it can help to generate pride – both for the individual and for the school – when pupils take part in representative sporting activities.  It also develops co-operation skills which is part of our school mission.  “We are a Catholic Family Learning Together”.

Sport is an integral aspect of health education, as it encourages an active and healthy lifestyle.  Our children are also encouraged to take part in sports which are provided outside the school environment.

Our school participates in local competitions against other schools in the Valley in the following sports:

Ø Rugby
Ø Football
Ø Cricket
Ø Basketball
Ø Rounders
Ø Swimming
Ø Netball
Ø Judo

In addition to these local sporting activities, we also take part in the Annual Welsh Catholic Junior Schools Athletic Competition.  In recent years, we have had individual winners and in 2002 were awarded the trophy for ‘Good Sportsmanship’.

Pupils are taken to the local swimming pool in Years 3 & 4 and they have swimming lessons from qualified instructors (which includes Mr McGuckin and Mrs Barlow who both have coaching qualifications).

We also have a great link with the local Sports Centre where our junior pupils take part in a four week ‘taster initiative’.  They take part in aerobics, gymnastics, trampolining and judo.  The judo teacher, Mr Kerry Pulverenti, also comes in to our school to teach judo to Years 4 & 5.

At the end of each academic year our Sports Shield is awarded to the Sports Personality of the Year.  During our Tuesday morning Assembly pupils who have won any kind of sporting certificate, medal or cup are given the award by Mr Kehoe and asked to explain the nature of their competition to the school.

We are very proud of our children who have represented Wales in their particular sport either when they were part of our school family or after they have left us.  Past pupils have represented our country in rugby, netball, basketball, cricket, trampolining, athletics and judo.
